Back to School: Uniform Violation
| September 6, 2011 | Filled under Kids & Babies, Mommy Joy |
By now, I think most kids are back in school. My daughter is obviously too young to be in school, but I wanted to share this note that my friend’s 4-year-old brought home for his mom to sign on his first day of private school:
First of all, my friend said that they never received anything before school started that the kids are not allowed to wear shoes that light up, and they’re new shoes that her son really likes. They ended up having to run out that night to buy a brand new pair. Second of all, a uniform violation for a 4-year-old? Really? And I like how the teacher ended the note with a smiley face so she wouldn’t seem so b*tchy about it. I do that at work when I’m emailing someone about something I don’t agree with but don’t want to seem mean about it, lol.
My friend received a lot of interesting comments about this note; some sharing other “uniform violations” their kids have received at school:
- Keeping a shirt tucked in all the way
- Having a ponytail holder on the wrist
- Socks that don’t cover up the whole ankle
I think these “uniform violations” are actually pretty funny but mostly because they seem so ridiculous. I understand that schools, especially private schools, have rules about what kids are to wear and not to wear, but if that’s the case, it’s important that they communicate their specific rules to the parents. Also, I can see how maybe light up shoes can be a distraction if the kids are looking down at their classmates’ feet all the time, but how do these things really affect their learning? Couldn’t getting a note like this make a child feel like they’re getting in trouble for something that probably is not their fault?
With the exception of college, I went to public school all of my life, so I never had to experience anything like this. We had a dress code, but it wasn’t until I was in middle school and high school, and it included things like no mid-drifts, no strapless or spaghetti straps tops, and no hats, which I think are more obvious. So, I’m curious…what are your thoughts? Have you or your kids ever come home with any notes from the school that seemed a little ridiculous? Leave me a comment below
