Review!: Disney On Ice Presents Rockin’ Ever After
| January 31, 2013 | Filled under Kids & Babies, Mommy Joy, Reviews/Giveaways |
Disney On Ice has a new show called Rockin’ Ever After that my family and I had the privilege of attending last week at Allstate Arena. I loved the show, but the most enjoyable part for me, was watching my 2-year old’s reactions throughout the show! Lia has been to other shows before, including Yo Gabba Gabba! Live! just 2 days before, but they were always in a theater so it was a little crowded and loud so it always took at least half-way through the show before she would warm up and really start reacting to the characters. But as soon as we walked into the arena, and she saw the Mickey Mouse silhouette in front of her, she was super excited for the show! Ever since we went to Disney World last June, Lia has loved everything Minnie Mouse and the Disney Jr. show, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse has become one of her favorites. I loved seeing her face light up when she saw Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy hit the ice! She kept yelling, “Look Mommy! It’s Mickey Mouse!”
She even sang and danced throughout almost the entire show.
Disney On Ice presents Rockin’ Ever After is set up like a variety show produced by Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy and features “mini-acts” of The Little Mermaid, Tangled, Brave, and Beauty and the Beast. The skating, including the jumps and lifts, formations of the skaters, costumes, sets, lighting, special effects, and music were all amazing! And in true magical Disney fashion, there were parts of the show when I found myself looking up in the rafters thinking “How did they do that?” I also loved that the characters interacted with the audience and had so much fun watching Lia wave to each character with so much excitement, especially since she’s typically pretty reserved and shy in public. My favorite act was “Under the Sea” where they used black lights to show some of the vibrant colors of the sea creatures in the dark as they “swam” by. My husband thought the show might have been one act too long, but I thought it was the perfect length, lasting a little over 2 hours, including intermission. My only complaint is that there is so much cool and fun merchandise to purchase that is so expensive, but I guess that is to be expected
Disney On Ice presents Rockin’ Ever After is in Chicago at the United Center through Sunday, February 10th. Review!: Yo Gabba Gabba! LIVE!: Get the Sillies Out!
| January 22, 2013 | Filled under Kids & Babies, Mommy Joy, Reviews/Giveaways |
My family and I were so lucky to get to watch Yo Gabba Gabba! LIVE!: Get the Sillies Out! in Milwaukee yesterday! It was full of so much energy and fun, packed with singing, dancing, confetti, and bubbles. They sang most of my daughter’s favorite Yo Gabba Gabba! songs, and the show even included the Super Music Friends Show and Dancey Dance Time. It was so much fun seeing my 2-year old sing and dance along!
My one disappointment was that Biz Markie was not part of the show we attended, so there was no Biz’s Beat of the Day as advertised, which is one of my daughter’s favorite parts of Yo Gabba Gabba!. I have some friends who attended the Chicago show who said that was the best part of the show. Apparently, he even played some “old school” music for the parents. I am not sure if it was because Biz Markie was missing from the show, but from start to finish, including intermission, it was only about an hour and 15 minutes long. Despite that, it was still a great time, and my daughter didn’t even realize Biz wasn’t there.
If your child is really into Yo Gabba Gabba!, I would really recommend taking them to see Yo Gabba Gabba! LIVE!: Get the Sillies Out!. The show was a lot of fun for both the kids and parents! It truly was AWWESSSOOMMMEEE!!! But I will give you a warning: my daughter has been asking to watch Yo Gabba Gabba! non-stop since the show!
Make sure to read my previous post about Yo Gabba Gabba! LIVE: Get the Sillies Out! for more information about the show and to find out if they are stopping by a city near you.

Review/Giveaway!: Melissa & Doug Trunki – Ends 12/17 at 12:01 am EST
| December 11, 2012 | Filled under Kids & Babies, Mommy Joy, Reviews/Giveaways |
About a month ago, I posted about Melissa & Doug’s Terrific Twenty Giveaway on their Facebook page where they gave away an item from their Terrific Twenty List everyday. Well, IT’S BACK! Now through Wednesday, December 19th, enter to win a Melissa & Doug product from their Terrific Twenty List daily on Melissa & Doug’s Facebook page!
Melissa & Doug’s Terrific Twenty List includes some great toys such as different wooden toy sets, art inspired sets, stuffed animals, and more! My 2-year old would LOVE the Whittle World School Bus Set, Wildlife Rescue Sorting Truck, and Dress Up Sticker Rolls (she is OBSESSED with stickers)!
One of the terrific items on Melissa & Doug’s list is the Trunki Suitcase, which also doubles as a play ‘n ride for kids. Meant for children ages 3 and up, it comes in many different colors and designs. It’s also great for storage and for travel as it’s just a little bit smaller than a regular carry-on suitcase.
MY REVIEW:
Somehow, as soon as my 2-year old daughter saw the Melissa & Doug Trunki, she knew exactly what to do with it! She got on it right away, grabbed the handles, and rode around our hardwood floors saying it was a race car. She loves it! She also has tons of fun filling her Trunki with toys (you can see how proud she was in the picture above). It comes with straps to hold the contents in on one side of the suitcase and another longer strap to connect on the outside to use as a shoulder strap or pull a child as she rides along. It also locks to make sure it doesn’t open up when you don’t want it to (like when your child is riding it) and the “key” is attached to the strap so it doesn’t get lost. It is a little bit smaller than I thought it would be, but if it was any bigger, I don’t think Lia would be able to ride it. It also fits a good amount for its size and I like that we would be able to carry it on the plane when we travel.
Look at how much fun Lia is having in this video!
GIVEAWAY!:
I’m happy to give one (1) My Joy My World reader a Melissa & Doug Trunki provided by Melissa & Doug! Entries will be accepted through Monday, December 17th, at 12:01 am EST. Costume Idea!: No-Sew Princess Dress for Under $20
| October 21, 2012 | Filled under Crafts, Creative Joy, Kids & Babies, Mommy Joy, Savings Joy |
About a month ago, we had a Super Why! themed birthday party for my daughter. I knew I wanted to dress her up as Princess Presto (Pea), but the only costumes I could find were at least $50, which I was not willing to pay, especially since she probably will only wear the dress once. I found the Dora Ballet Dress pictured on the left on sale at Target for less than $10 and decided to turn into a Princess Presto dress. If you’re not able to find this dress, you can use any inexpensive dress-up dress out there or even check out a thrift store, consignment store, or Goodwill. There are usually some great finds, especially for Halloween costumes!
Except for the dress, I bought all my supplies at Michael’s:
- Aleene’s No-Sew Fabric Glue – $2.99
- 10 yards of satin ribbon – $0.50 each spool (1/2-5/8 inch width works best)
- 3 yards of sparkly green Halloween ribbon – $1.99 each spool
- 5 feet Tinkerbell rhinestone ribbon – $5.99 (I chose to splurge on this, but you can go without it)
- 6 pack of 8.5″ x 11″ glitter foam adhesive – $4.79 (you can also get single sheets, which would be less expensive if you don’t plan on using all 6 colors)
These are the regular prices without coupon. Make sure you check Michael’s website to see what coupons are available when you go.
Please keep in mind that the No-Sew Fabric Glue is a TEMPORARY adhesive. It holds up well, but the costume will fall apart if you wash it. They do have permanent fabric glue available that can be washed, but if you plan on having your child wear the costume multiple times, I would recommend you sew everything on to make sure everything is secure. Scissors and a de-threader will also be helpful for this project.
The first thing I did was use the de-threader to gently remove all of the extra embellishments that were on the dress that I did not want such as the tulle sleeves, zig-zag ribbon on the front of the dress and around the neck, and the Dora flower. Then I glued the ribbon at the bottom of each ruffle of the dress. I did this in 1 1/2-2 inch sections making sure the glue dried before moving onto the next section. For the belt, I layered light green satin ribbon with glue until it was the width that I wanted. For the middle, I cut out a circle from the green glitter foam and star from the purple glitter foam and put the star on top of the circle. I then glued it onto the belt on the dress. Lastly, I glued the rhinestone ribbon onto the front of the dress and lining the neck and sleeves. I placed a dot of glue on the back of each rhinestone to do this. The rhinestones actually did not hold up too well with the glue, so if you choose to use them, I recommend sewing around the string in between each rhinestone to secure it to the fabric. Otherwise lil Lia’s dress held up her whole birthday party including the bounce house!
Hopefully, these tips help you this Halloween or any other occasion you or your little one may need to dress up for! If you have any questions or any other tips, please leave me a comment below
HAPPY CRAFTING!

Party Ideas!: Balloon Weights & Favor/Treat Bags
| September 16, 2012 | Filled under Crafts, Creative Joy, Kids & Babies, Mommy Joy, Savings Joy |
We had a Super Why! party for my daughter’s 2nd birthday yesterday, and I just wanted to share some great ideas to help you save some money when throwing a kid’s party:
Balloon Weights:
I learned this super inexpensive idea for balloon weights from my sister-in-law. Instead of buying balloon weights at the store, take a regular bottled water, wrap it in gift tissue, and tie ribbon around the top to hold the tissue in place. I like using 2 different colors and curling ribbon to give it an extra decorative touch. It was REALLY easy and I loved that I was able to use something that I had a lot of for the party anyway instead of having to spend the extra money at the store!
Favor/Treat Bags:
When having a themed party, I find it difficult to get carried away with all the decorations and favor bags, especially when they have themed favor bags/boxes out there that are already made for you. We needed 16 favor bags, so I had to make sure they were inexpensive, but also wanted the kids to like what was in them. Walmart has some great favor bag toys for affordable prices! I was able to make all 16 bags under for $20. Each bag had: sunglasses, “play-doh”, bubbles, and candy. Each girl’s bag had a princess wand, and each boy’s bag had a sticky frog. I was able to get 20 clear treat bags with balloons on them for less than $2. The princess wands wouldn’t fit in the bag, so I tied them on the outside of the bag with a twisty tie and curling ribbon. I did the same with the sunglasses for the boys bag. I think having an item on the outside of the bags actually got the kids more excited for them! I then added a label to make it more “Super Why!-ish” (regrettably, we ran out of color ink right before we were going to print the labels, so they were black & white, but I think they still turned out okay).
Here’s a close-up:
Do you have any other inexpensive party ideas? I would LOVE to hear them! Leave me a comment below

Mommy Experience!: Ear Tubes (Myringotomy) for Chronic Ear Infections
| January 25, 2012 | Filled under Kids & Babies, Mommy Joy |
My 16-month old went in for a myringotomy (ear tubes) Friday morning to treat her chronic ear infections, and even though we knew it was a fairly simple procedure, my husband and I were really nervous about it! During a myringotomy, a hole is created in the ear drum, where a tube is placed to keep the hole open, so that fluid can drain. This prevents fluid build-up in the ear that can lead to ear infections, since bacteria can grow in the fluid. The tube usually falls out on its own within 6 to 12 months, and the child is good to go with no more ear infections.
Why the ear tubes?
We actually didn’t realize that Lia had a problem with ear infections until her last one, which was originally found at her 15-month well child check-up. The day after she finished her 10-day course of antibiotics, she developed a fever, which lasted for almost 4 days. We took her back to the doctor and found that her ear infection had gotten worse, and the other ear was infected too. When her doctor asked how many ear infections she has had, we realized that she has had one at pretty much every well check she has had since she was born, plus one other time. We didn’t know that it was a problem because she has only showed any symptoms twice out of the 5 or 6 ear infections that she has had. Her pediatrician recommended that Lia see an ENT (ear, nose, and throat specialist) to check if she needs ear tubes, since she has had so many infections in her lifetime.
Visit to the ENT:
Lia surprised us by doing so well at the ENT! She let the doctor check her ears and let the audiologist run 2 tests on each ear, which required probes that were like plugs in her ears and stickies on her head. The first test was to check if there was any fluid in her ears, and the second test checked her hearing. She passed both tests in her left ear, but her right ear had fluid, so she failed the hearing test on that side. At that point, it was clear that the best thing for her would be to proceed with the myringotomy.
Pre-op exam:
Before Lia could have the surgery, she had to have a pre-operation evaluation, so we went back to her pediatrician’s office. The pre-op visit was just a more thorough physical than her well-child checks, but without the shots, which the baby was probably happy about. They did not run any tests, but they did ask a lot of questions about her health and development and checked her body over to make sure she was fit for surgery. Although she did have a runny nose, she was cleared for surgery. We just had to watch for any fever or congestion that interfered with her breathing, since those were things that could cause them to postpone a surgery.
Before the surgery:
The myringotomy was scheduled for 8:15 in the morning, which meant we had to be at the hospital at 6:45 am. Since we knew we had to get Lia up early, we had her skip her afternoon nap the day before so we could get her to bed early. She was not to eat or drink anything other than clear liquids after 2 am and nothing after 6 am since it could cause a reaction to the anesthesia. When we checked into the hospital, we had to fill out the usual paperwork for billing and authorizations. Around 7:35, they had us dress Lia into her hospital gown and took her vitals (a blood pressure cuff around her calf and pulse-ox sticky on her big toe). They also gave her some Tylenol to help with any pain she might feel after the surgery. The nurses, doctor, and anesthesiologist came in while we waited to answer all of our questions. We were actually more worried about Lia being traumatized from being taken away from us than we were about the surgery, so we made sure to ask them exactly what was going to happen, so that we could explain it to her before she went in. We also made sure to let them know that we were concerned about her having “stranger danger” and that we were afraid that she would freak out when she didn’t see any familiar faces. We were relieved to know that there would be no IVs involved and that the anesthesia would be administered through a mask. I’m not sure if Lia understood us when we explained to her what was going to happen, but our little cutie laughed when we told her that they were going to put a mask on her face and she would fall asleep. She even let the nurse take her from me and did not start crying until she realized that we weren’t going with her.
The surgery:
The procedure itself did not take very long. After they took Lia to the operating room, they led us to a waiting room, where we were to wait for the doctor to come out after the surgery was finished to let us know how it went. I only played 3 or 4 words in Words with Friends and quickly checked my Facebook to see who “Liked” the picture of Lia in her hospital gown before the doctor came in. We were so happy to hear that the surgery went well and she was already in recovery. She had an infection in her right ear but that would clear up with the ear drops she used for 5 days after the surgery. A nurse came to get us once Lia woke up and we heard her screaming from the waiting room. Luckily, she calmed down as soon as I was able to hold her. We were only there for about an hour after the surgery before we were able to go home. During that time, a nurse took her vitals 2 more times to make sure she was okay to be released from the hospital and she gave us her discharge instructions.
After the surgery:
All kids react differently to surgery and anesthesia, but all I heard from friends and even Lia’s pediatrician is that they usually wake up as monsters! So I took the whole day off of work and made sure to prepare myself to have a groggy and/or cranky baby all day. We must have one tough girl because from the time I took her when she woke up from the surgery until we got home, she didn’t cry! She wasn’t even crabby! We got in the car and on the way home, she said, “I’m tired”, and she took a nap as soon as we got home. When she woke up, she played all day like never ever happened! The only concern we had since the procedure is that the next morning, there was a bloody discharge coming from her left ear, which freaked us out a little bit even though it didn’t seem to bother her. Fortunately, that is normal in the first 48 hours after the surgery. Other than that, she has been golden! We can even tell that she can hear us better because it seems like she’s acknowledging that she understands what we’re saying more by answering “Yes” and “No”. My baby girl amazes me everyday
